- Spot clean and hang dry. Gentle handwashing is ok, but I recommend only washing the body of the hebao. Clip the tassels to the side or remove them entirely. Do not submerge the tassel.

History

Hebao is a small pouch with many uses. Its records date back to pre-Qin Dynasty periods (221 - 206 BCE)!

The drawstring closure with a round body is the most recognizable, but it comes in many shapes and sizes. Popular shapes include the peach, gourd, or square satchel with a flap. The material also varies, from leather to fine kesi silk.

Hebao is also known as Xiangbao (香包) or 'fragrant pouch'. It is filled with herbs during festivals or for medicinal purposes. For example, mugwort is used during Dragon Boat Festival.

Though it started as a useful way to carry items, over time it also became symbolic. Lovers would make and gift hebao to each other as an expression of affection. Emperors would gift it to high ranking officials in favor, family, or concubines during selection. It is a personal item used everyday, so receiving it from a loved or respected person is a huge compliment!
