Wash and Care
The care instructions for different fabrics is listed below. The gentler you are with your item, the longer it will last. You can find the fabric type on the product page or hang tags.
Accessories and embroidery should be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth, never machine washed. Remove all items like pins and tassels before washing.
Handwashing
- Mix a small amount of gentle detergent with cold water in a basin. Animal fibers need special detergent
- Gently massage your item around the soapy bath and leave to sit for 10-20 minutes
- Empty and fill with cold water to rinse. Let this sit for another few minutes. Be sure to rinse out all the soap and gently squeeze out excess water. Do not wring or scrub aggressively.
- Roll up in a dry towel, press, then lay flat to dry.
Machine Washing
It is possible to machine-wash some items, but keep in mind this can reduce its longevity. Make sure to follow these tips first:
- Put your item in a delicates bag
- Wash on the gentlest setting possible (delicate/gentle cycle, no/low spin).
- Roll up in a dry towel and press out excess water
- Hang or Lay flat to dry (recommended if your item is heavy)
- Do not put your item in the dryer! You can use the air-dry or no heat tumble setting for a few minutes max to soften up the fabric again.
Wool and Silk
These are animal fibers that need to be washed differently. You should treat them like human hair - no heat, chemicals, or scrubbing. A neutral/slightly acidic pH is best. These should never go in the dryer.
Wool doesn't need to be washed often since it naturally resists dirt. You can often spot clean and air out wool instead of washing the entire garment.
Silk is more fragile when wet, so harsh treatment can distort your piece. The shine and finish naturally dulls over time if you wash it at home. Water can leave stains if it isn't evenly submerged. As a result, silk is usually dry cleaned- but you can still hand wash if these factors don't bother you.
- Use specific animal fiber detergents (like Eucalan). A plain shampoo also works (pH neutral or slightly acidic). I recommend dry cleaning if you are unsure.
- Felting is when the fibers of wool lock together, which causes shrinking. Wool will felt badly if exposed to heat and agitation, so never put it in the dryer. Sometimes a regular machine wash will also felt wool. I highly recommend hand washing wool or dry cleaning. If you must machine wash, follow instructions above but make sure it is on a no spin cycle.
- Wash gently, like you're washing a bowl of blueberries! Less is more with these items. A good soak is better than constantly swishing things around.
Hang Tag Instructions
Cotton, Linen, Hemp, Ramie
These natural fibers can withstand higher temperatures. They can be prone to wrinkles, especially since we use untreated fabric. Steaming or misting with water will help iron out the wrinkles.
- Hand wash, dry clean, or machine wash gentle in a delicates bag
- In cold water with like colors
- Do not bleach
- Hang dry
- Warm iron or steam
- Do not pull at seams, wring, or scrub aggressively
- Do not iron any boning
Polyester / Synthetics
Polyester is a synthetic fiber. It's usually made from PET plastic, which is melted then spun into fibers. High temperature, bleach, and harsh chemicals can melt and damage the fabric.
- Hand wash, dry clean, or machine wash gentle in a delicates bag
- In cold water with like colors
- Do not bleach
- Hang dry
- Cool iron
- Do not pull at seams, wring, or scrub aggressively
- Do not iron any boning
Wool
Wool is prone to shrinking and may lose its shape if treated harshly or subjected to high temperatures. Avoid the dryer and agitation in the wash.
- Dry clean or hand wash gently
- Do not bleach
- Hang dry
- Steam inside out or iron on the lowest setting with a thin cloth on top
- Do not pull at seams, wring, or scrub aggressively
- Do not iron any boning
Silk
Silk is incredibly delicate and becomes fragile when wet. It is prone to shrinking and may lose its shape if treated harshly or subjected to high temperatures.
- Dry clean only
- Do not bleach
- Hang dry
- Steam inside out or iron on the lowest setting with a thin cloth on top
- Do not pull at seams, wring, or scrub aggressively
- Do not iron any boning
Thrifted / Vintage
The content of thrifted fabric is often unlisted. We may use multiple pieces together, so we have the gentlest instructions for these clothes.
- Hand wash or dry clean
- In cold water with like colors
- Do not bleach
- Hang dry
- Cool iron
- Do not pull at seams, wring, or scrub aggressively
- Do not iron any boning
