Care
How do I wash my item?
Refer to the Wash and Care page for more info.
Most items need to be gently hand-washed with mild laundry detergent. Handmade clothing and vintage fabrics are delicate, so it's important to follow the care instructions.
What if I can't hand-wash my clothes?
Hand-washing is best, but I understand this can be difficult for some.
Items with boning, embroidery, or metal decorations cannot be machine-washed. If this is an issue, please email me and we can work around it. I'm always open to altering clothes to fit your needs! Wool and Silks have special washing instructions.
It is possible to machine-wash some items, but keep in mind this can be damaging and reduce its longevity. If you must machine-wash, make sure to follow these tips:
- Put your item in a delicates bag
- Wash on the gentlest setting possible (delicate/gentle cycle, no/low spin).
- Hang dry (do not put your item in the dryer!). You can use the air-dry or no heat tumble setting for a few minutes to soften up the fabric again.
Why are my clothes wrinkly?
Wrinkles are inevitable for natural untreated fibers (cotton, linen). They are easily ironed out. It's a lot like hair - heat will set it into shape, but it will lose that shape when you wash it again.
- Refer to the Wash and Care page for ironing instructions. Synthetic fabrics tend to wrinkle less (or not at all).
Most of our cotton fabric is untreated or organic, which limits the chemicals used during processing. This is much better for our health and the environment, but the downside is: wrinkles!
Why do my clothes have a scent?
Diluted vinegar is used to iron out wrinkles and set pleats. It's also a natural way to soften the fabric. You can use this method at home in place of fabric softener! Just mix 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water, mist sparingly, and iron over it.
The scent should be faint and will wash out completely, but you can contact us to omit this step.
Wool (especially when wet) can smell like lanolin or sheep. It means the wool is minimally processed and the lanolin keeps the wool conditioned and soft. All fabric is washed before sewing, so rest assured that your item is not dirty- just from nature :) The smell will go away over time when washed, dry cleaned, or aired out.
Info
What are you doing to be sustainable?
The sustainability tab goes over everything from fabric to packaging.
In short, I prioritize secondhand fabrics and save every scrap/excess from the sewing process to be reused.
I mostly work with natural fibers, which are gentler on the skin and don't shed microplastics. If I do use synthetics, I only use secondhand/thrifted.
It isn't possible to be 100% sustainable or truly "zero" waste, but I am dedicated to operating sustainably. Let me know if there is any way I can improve :)
What is GOTS/OEKO-TEX?
- GOTS (organic) regulates the environmental, ethical, and health impact of fabric production. It focuses on many different parts of the supply chain and has stricter regulations on chemicals, organic certification, and working conditions.
- OEKO-TEX focuses more on screening and regulating hazardous chemical content. They have different levels of certification, depending on what the fabric will be used for (ex. fabric for baby clothing has the strictest regulation).
We mainly use organic or secondhand/thrifted fabric when possible.
